Mairehau Primary School principal John Bangma said the trust is a vital part of schools managing anxiety-related issues. “Neighbourhood trust has been fantastic, but it needs to be more effectively funded to do its work,” Mr Bangma said.

Mrs Larsen said in spite of its funding running out, the trust is committed to helping the area in the long term and is looking to find a solution. The trust has run its Mairehau Neighbourhood Project for the last three years on funding from
the city council and the Tindall Foundation, and additional funding from the Ministry of Social Development this year. It is a shame that so many vital services offered by non-Government organisations in our city are reliant on philanthropic and Government funding. Almost every year, they have to fill the myriad of forms as they apply again and again in the hopes of securing money for vital programmes. It is like facing losing your job every year. Neighbourhood Trust finds itself in this position with the counselling role it offers quake-stressed children. Principals are worried that if they do not find funding, kids will not get the support they need and if principals are concerned we should be concerned (page 1). There was a bit of a buzz around Tane Apanui’s idea for a train service that will go from North Canterbury, through Papanui and into the city. Cycleway nears completion By Julia Evans THE PAPANUI Parallel Cycleway has entered the final stages of its construction. Completion of the Papanui section of the city council’s $156 million project is set for June. The route will connect Northlands Shopping Centre and the Northern Line Cycleway to the central city, offering a
safer option for cyclists than main arterial roads. An update from the city council said construction is progressing well from the northern end of Rutland St south to Bealey Ave. Businesses on Rutland St had struggled with construction right on their doorsteps and one dairy owner made just $40 a day.
However, work has now moved further along the street. The cycleway is expected to attract new commuters, shoppers and recreational cyclists. “The major cycle routes aim to encourage new groups of people to try cycling as a commuting option by connecting suburbs, shopping areas, businesses, schools and sporting destinations,” said city council head of
transport Chris Gregory. He said it’s very exciting for the city. “As each route nears completion, I think residents around the city can see the big picture coming together now as we develop this network.” Mr Gregory said the city council is aware that residents are getting anxious to begin using it.
Museum guide a permanent exhibit By Tom Doudney THE AIR Force Museum’s oldest and longest-serving guide is used to showing people the exhibits but now he is part of one himself. A cardboard cut-out of Burnside resident Laurie Turner, 93, is among about 30 currently positioned around the museum to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. A total of 80 such cut-outs of those who have served RNZAF were created, each accompanied with information about the person’s career. More will soon be placed in the museum. They comprise a diverse selection of individuals, with all manner of ranks
and trades. The display was launched at the Air Tattoo at Ohakea last month, where it was viewed by thousands. Mr Turner has been volunteering as a guide at the museum since it opened in 1987. His cut-out depicts him in his younger days with RNZAF. Having served as a bomb aimer during World War 2, Mr Turner returned to the RNZAF as an accounts officer in 1952. In 1955, he was posted to No. 14 Squadron, which was about to finish its deployment to Cyprus. He assisted with the arrangements for the squadron’s move to Tengah, Singapore. He retired in 1973, after several decades managing the finances of the service.

In Brief CRANFORD REGENERATION Rural land in Papanui and St Albans is one step closer to being rezoned for residential development. The city council is opening public feedback on Thursday regarding the draft Cranford Regeneration Plan that would see 125ha of former farm land between McFaddens and Winters Rd redeveloped. The city council said it considers the edge of the basin suitable for residential development and proposes rezoning 38ha for housing. NAKED MAN Police were called to Leinster Rd on March 20 after reports of an intoxicated man running along the road naked. A unit was dispatched to the area but the man could not be located. TREE REMOVAL LIKELY A proposed widening of the St James cycleway at the junction with Harewood Rd would likely see the removal of trees. This comes as route options are being discussed for the extension of the cycleway from St James Park through the Papanui shopping area and past Papanui High School northwards. The trees are silver birches but Papanui-Innes Community Board member John Stringer urged residents to let him know if they have any concerns.

Gizmo’s Adventure Gizmo, an 11 year old Ginger tabby from Sydney, presented to Catherine one morning with an acute left hindleg lameness. He wasn’t placing any weight on the leg and seemed in a lot of pain. Catherine suspected a femoral fracture due to his leg swinging and the obvious angulation mid femur. No other injuries were seen. He had normal neurological function. All his nails were scuffed and worn. Most often we see these injuries with road traffic accidents. Blood work the previous week was great. Catherine performed a digital xray to confirm her suspicions and Gizmo was immediately placed on intravenous fluids with pain relief ( a fentanyl CRI) and started on penicillin. A transverse femoral fracture located proximal third femur was diagnosed. His diaphragm was intact, as was his bladder and all his other abdominal organs looked fine. Surgery to repair the fracture or amputation were the only options
available. This fracture couldn’t be left to just heal on its own. The clients were informed of the options – a referral to a specialist orthopaedic surgeon to plate the femur or IM pinning and cerclage wire performed at McMaster & Heap Vet practice. We repeated blood work to make sure Gizmo was still in good health to sustain an anaesthetic. The IM pinning option was adopted. His ongoing arthritic issues would have made losing a hindleg difficult for him to cope with, especially at 11 years old. Dr Michele McMaster performed the surgery within 24 hours of Gizmo being admitted. It is important with this type of injury to get those bone ends realigned as soon as possible. The anaesthetic and surgery went without a hitch. Gizmo was connected to our Cardell monitoring machine. The nurses can record his heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, body core temperature and

oxygen saturation every 5 minutes during his anaesthetic. All his vital signs were excellent. I placed a large intramedullary pin through the medullary cavity of his femur to reduce the fracture and align the ends of the femur. A single cerclage wire was also placed to create as much stability as possible. Post operative xrays confirmed perfect placement. Now the rest is up to Gizmo. Gizmo was discharged
3 days later able to stand and get into his dirt tray, eating up a storm and with the surgical site looking great. He was starting to place the paw when he left here. He will be in a cage for 4-6 weeks to allow as much immobility as possible for fracture healing. I will remove the pin in about 6-8 weeks once the fracture site has calloused and healed. Gizmo will be back weekly for us to check on his progress. A great outcome all around. -Dr Michele McMaster
The School at the Terminus, published in 1986, was a superb analysis of the school’s history. It was based on meticulous research and the skilful use of a wide-range of relevant sources. While working on these and other publications, she chaired the Canterbury Women’s Regional Committee of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, now Heritage New Zealand. She was also president, and later patron, of the Soil and Health Association and also found time to belong to the Canterbury Herb Society and the local branch of the New Zealand Iris Society. Unfortunately, Mollie did not manage to achieve two major ambitions. An analysis of some of her personal papers recently donated to the Papanui Heritage Group by her son Richard Chalklen, makes it obvious that she planned to write a general history of Papanui. She was also close to completing a master’s thesis on the topic of the religious settlements of North Canterbury. Unfortunately, in 2005, she suffered a stroke and found it impossible to complete these projects. However, Mollie will be remembered for her highly-significant contribution as a local historian and for her whole-hearted participation in community affairs. •Thanks to Richard Chalklen for biographical detail. MOLLIE FREEMAN Sharp (19302015) received her primary schooling at Broomfield, near Amberley, and then attended Christchurch Girls’ High School. After completing secondary school, she had set her heart on studying history at tertiary level. But Mollie’s father believed that university was not an appropriate destination for his daughter and she was encouraged to apply for a job in the Department of Health where her ability was soon recognised with promotion within the bureaucracy. In 1953, she married Neil Chalklen and later they moved into a new house at 76 Sawyers Arms Rd opposite the Papanui Domain. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Mollie attended university classes on a part time basis, eventually graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history and linguistics in 1983. The 1980s was to be a busy, but successful, decade in terms of her developing reputation as a local historian. In 1985, she completed The Church to the North of the River Avon, a publication that marked the 125th jubilee of St Luke the Evangelist. In 1990, she wrote a centennial publication for the local Cambrian Society. The Chalklen children had attended Papanui High School and her natural interest in the school was recognised when the old students’ association invited her to write a book commemorating the school’s 50th jubilee.

One man’s bid for train system Tane Apanui talks to Noah Graham about his campaign to gain support for a railway system that would run from North Canterbury through Papanui and into the city How has it been trying to organise the Dash Rail project? I’m a one-man band, so it’s been very difficult trying to organise it. It’s been more than two years of work getting it done. The last city council were a bit more difficult to work with, whereas the new city council is a lot better to work with so that’s been good. I think we’ve elected the right people. Why is having a community railway system in Christchurch important? We Kiwis, we’re addicted to cars. When I was in Australia, I bought myself a nice Holden Commodore but then I took the train and I thought, wow, this is stress-free. You just jump on the train. One of the telling numbers for me that showed we need it was the suicide rate in Christchurch has doubled since the quakes. So I thought about the amount of stress it takes to break someone and if we are adding an extra 10 hours a week of stress because of the morning commute, when we could be sitting on a train using wi-fi just relaxing before work, I think it would go a long way to helping the mindset of the city. We’re fairly tense at the moment and we have been for a couple of years. So putting in a railway that needs to be done anyway, is going to help alleviate those daily stresses. What are some of the challenges you have faced while trying to get this system under way? One of the biggest obstructions I’ve faced when it comes to putting in rail is people don’t think it will succeed. But when you look at modelling for transport, the No 1 concern is travel

time. The train is twice as fast as a bus and 50 per cent faster than a car. So when people wonder why the buses are failing, it’s because they are too slow. Whereas if they were to link up with a main system – this is where the rail should be a centrepiece – your whole public transport system would function better. At the moment, the buses are floundering all over the city. What was it like being a Hornby Ward candidate last year and why did you do it? It was difficult as well. Constituents base a lot of their trust on whether they have met you or not, regardless of what you are actually like. I would go doorknocking and people would say they have already made up their mind. That was hard. I’m a lucky person. No-one can achieve any-

thing without the community around them. You can’t be successful without people lifting you up or putting you in a position to be successful. I suppose growing up in a poverty-stricken, broken home, I managed to get a couple of lucky breaks. I came over to Canterbury to play hockey. Even though I’m a high school drop-out from a poor family, I got these really cool opportunities. As a community, we need to recognise the people who have actually helped us get there. You’ve had a variety of jobs, including flying a plane, what was that like? It’s been a lot of work. I did eventually find a job when I was in Australia flying a 1942 de Havilland tiger moth and it was cold and miserable because of the open cockpit. The first five
minutes you are like, wow, and then it hits you and you’re like, “you know, this open cockpit thing is not awesome.” I’ve done a wee bit of flying, but I didn’t do a lot in that job, it just didn’t pay enough. I’ve done more excavator and operator work I suppose in scrap steel yards. Could you tell me a bit about your family? We’re all over the place. We’re not what you’d call a tight family. I’ve got a sister who is awesome. She is the coolest sister in the world. She lived in Christchurch recently and is the chief finance officer of CerebralFix. She bought a house in Westport and is working in the epic centre over there and still working for CerebralFix. You also represented Canterbury in under-18 hockey, what
was that like? I was born and raised in Greymouth so getting into a Canterbury side, especially for hockey, was a big deal. I think I was one of the first kids ever from the West Coast to make the Canterbury side. Then I went on to play for the Canterbury under-21s in 2000. We won both of those tournaments, the under-18 and the under-21s. Then, a few years later, I went on to coach the under-21s and we won both of those tournaments in 2004 and 2005 – back-to-back national tournaments. Playing for Canterbury was awesome, and was definitely one of the highlights of my career. What was coaching like compared to playing? Stressful. Coaching is stressful. When you’re playing, it’s a lot more fun. Coaching takes years off of your life expectancy. You do meet some cool people though. You’ve also worked with deaf and blind communities in Australia and New Zealand, how did you get into that? I was dating a sign language interpreter over in Australia, so I took up sign language. I did a couple of courses over there and, whenever I could help out with the deaf community, I did. I did a camp where you deal with people who are both deaf and blind. If you’ve not seen how deaf and blind people interact, it’s incredible. They’re quick and articulate and if they don’t like you, they let you know really quick. They’re incredible people. If you had spare time, what would you do? If I had time to play hockey, I’d play hockey. I’d go to the gym or I would play World Of Warcraft. Actually, the last time I logged on was probably a month and a half ago because I’ve been so flat out organising the train network. •Readers opinions on the proposed railway system, page 8

Debut for young actor By Julia Evans LAST FRIDAY the curtain went up for Alex Wilson’s debut theatre performance. He’s starring as Benji in Showbiz’s Priscilla, Queen of the Desert at the Isaac Theatre Royal, the production will run until April 8. Alex’s mother Cathy Wilson said the opportunity almost came out of nowhere. It was Alex’s chorale Alex Wilson teacher at Cobham Intermediate School who put his name forward to audition, that landed him the role. “I’ve always liked watching the plays that come to school, now I get to be in one,” Alex said. Benji is the son of one of Priscilla’s main characters, Tick, who is on a journey back to Alice Springs but is apprehensive about introducing his son to his flamboyant new lifestyle. The role is key in reinforcing the message of tolerance and diversity, Showbiz said. Alex shares the role with

Alex said that’s to help with the late nights, but they don’t worry him too much. “The hardest part is staying on top of your lines and remembering that you’re not the centre of the scene,” Alex said.
FOR THE 27th year running the Papanui-Innes Ward Community Pride Garden Awards have been presented. Last Monday awards were presented to residents and businesses with outstanding gardens and streetscapes at the Christchurch North Methodist Church in Papanui. The aim is to encourage civic garden pride and acknowledge those who have contributed to maintaining the garden city im-
age by beautifying their streets and gardens. This year there were 99 nominated gardens and 56 people attended the event hosted by the Papanui-Innes Community Board. The awards are a city council initiative and have been a collaboration between the community boards and the Christchurch Beautifying Association since 1997. Judging took place in January.

From kitchen fires to bathtub shenanigans By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer OVER THE past couple of weeks, several people have had the misfortune of having the Fire Service called to their house because of a blaze in the kitchen. At one in Hoon Hay recently, firefighters had to smash a window to get into a well-locked house with a pot on fire on the stove. There’s got to be a sinking feeling when you get the call after having gone out that there’s a fire at your house. I know it’s easy to forget and, in this case, smoke was the only cause of damage to the house, but the possibility of a complete disaster is certainly there. You’ve just got to remember to switch elements off. A lady in a motorised wheelchair had the misfortune of becoming stuck up against a wall when the control panel for her scooter failed in Bellbrook Tce, Shirley. She obviously, and fortunately, had her phone with her and had the presence of mind to call 111. This wasn’t a fire. It was a call
for help. And the St Albans crew that responded had to break in to her house to free her. It’s the sort of thing firefighters do without complaint. So well done to the St Albans crew. Finally, you know the stainless steel or brass grill in the plug hole of your bath? I bet you can’t get your finger down it, but a small child can – just. However, getting their finger out is another matter. The Addington crew had to spend almost an hour dismantling the bath in Hoon Hay Rd to do it. There was no injury, just a very relieved wee fellow when he was eventually freed.

Readers respond to Tane Apanui’s Pledge Me campaign to have passenger trains run from the city through Papanui and out to North Canterbury in order to ease traffic congestion. Karen Kingsford – Love, love, love this. Just what a progressive Canterbury should be shooting for. It would provide jobs and transportation and get people out of cars. It has to start somehow. We don’t want to be bogged down like Auckland. It’s really about great planners using what’s available and identifying and sourcing (locally if possible) what’s not. All the great cities have rail and have had for years. People want to live and work where there is great infrastructure. Cantabrians need to think about their future and the generations ahead. Mark Docherty – What a fantastic idea. About time the rail system was put to good use. Roger Larkins – Unfortunately, it is largely a feel good idea. . . to be effective, it needs to operate frequently and costeffectively. It also needs to go to and from places that people actually travel to. It also needs tracks that are available for use at the appropriate times. In Christchurch, the tracks have
scheduled freight, the stations don’t meet the general community needs, the schedule would be infrequent and the cost of operation on a per journey basis will be either very high, or heavily subsidised. Andrew Deadman – About bloody time someone gave this a shot. Nicky Gibson – About time we had some sort of rail service back, just back from Australia and, wow, the trains are the way to go for sure. Come on New Zealand, bring our train service back. Christine Mottram – They should bring the railway station into the centre of Christchurch near the bus terminal so people can get off the train and catch a
bus to where they need to go like in Auckland. For people coming in from North Canterbury and Rolleston, it would save some of the traffic congestion on the motorway. Jeff Bell – This is a case of shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. For years, places like Kaiapoi had a railway station with ample parking available – now there is housing there.

Teen track cyclist tops age group By Andrew King ST MARGARET’S College student Jenna Borthwick was crowned under-15 champion at the age group national track championships in Cambridge this month. Her stunning effort of three wins and a second place helped take the 13-year-old from Ashburton to the title. “I am so proud and pretty excited,” she said. Competing with the MidSouth Canterbury team, she won the 5K points race, 1500m scratch race and 750m derby and was very close to winning the 500m time trial. In 2016, Borthwick won the 1500m scratch and 750m derby
races and was third in the 500m time trial. Growing up in Ashburton, her love of cycling came from her father, who got her into the sport at the Tinwald Velodrome, when she was four. “I started getting competitive when I was 13 . . . I would really like to make a career out of it,” she said. Her team was helped out by four-time national road race champion Hayden Roulston, who is also from Ashburton. “He was so good at working with us on plans and our warmup. He is such a professional,” she said. It was her first time competing in the North Island and the taste
SPORTS of it has left her wanting more. “I am looking forward to getting into next season . . . I have been given a two-week break by my coach and then I will start hitting the road again,” she said.

Student builds towards a career in triathlon By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College student Saxon Morgan won the Canterbury secondary schools triathlon championships last week at Scarborough ahead of great friend and rival Zachary Taylor. Morgan, 16, completed the 350m swim, 9km bike and 3km run in 31min 57.6sec. He finished 50sec ahead of Christchurch Boys’ High School student Taylor to come first overall in the under-19 category. Taylor’s brother, William, came third in the overall standings, but first in the under-14 individual category and only 24sec behind his older brother. “Zac (Taylor) was my main competition in the race and we both got into clear water in the swim and then he tried to pull away on the bike, but I matched his pace and surged in my run to take the win,” Morgan said. He said he and Taylor do a lot of training together and it is good to have that competitiveness between mates. All competitors start the race at the same time, but when they finish, they are separated off into individual categories ar-
ranged by age. Morgan is looking to make a career out of triathlon, and will head to Europe with his family in April for four months. “While I am over there, I will do a lot of training and compete in a few races to see if I like it,” he said. He spends about 15 hours a week training – three hours running, four on the bike and four in the pool and ocean. Before he heads overseas, Morgan is focusing on the upcoming New Zealand schools triathlon national championships on Thursday in Wanganui. “I feel like I am ready for the nationals after this win. I’m feeling confident,” he said. App will keeps students in touch with Mairehau High By Julia Evans MAIREHAU HIGH School students Kees Gifford-Whanau and Michael Scanlan are excited about keeping in touch with their school through its new app. The app is set to be released in the coming weeks. School deputy principal Rebecca Swanson said the idea came after a staff discussion about how to make it easier for parents and the community to find out more information about the school. “With society’s ever increasing reliance on mobile devices, we thought an app was the perfect option,” she said. people, quickly,” Ms Swanson said. Alerts can be sent to all users with key information or even just to certain groups. “When you download it, you can subscribe to different alert groups, whether it be a
sports team, a year level or a scholarship study group.” The app was developed in conjunction with Snapp Mobile and has other features, which include parents being able to send in absences, contact school staff, sync with the school events calendar, daily notices and newsletters. The school is excited to launch the app to the community and Ms Swanson said it hopes to strengthen its relationships with families and students even further.
